Kitchen Sink Crisp

summer sweetnessGet out a 9 x 13 pan.  Fill it with a mixture of sliced nectarines and plums, blueberries, and pitted cherries. No need to peel anything.  Toss in 1/2 c. flour and 3/4 c. sugar.  Top with this, perfectly crunchy because of white sugar (less moisture than brown sugar) and melted butter (counter-intuitive, I know).  Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or until lightly brown on top and bubbling around the edges.

I made this for the fire station and a little one for me and the kids.  After all the baking I’ve done for those guys this first month, I haven’t gotten any overt compliments.  I’d like to say just doing it is it’s own reward, but I’d be lying.  Where’s the praise?  This crisp unlocked the compliments.  Yancey said he and another firefighter were in the middle of a call (i.e. life-and-death situation) when his co-worker said, “Man, that crisp was so good.  You’re a lucky man.”  First responders, by the way, can multitask like nobody’s business, so their patient was still in good hands even though they had crisp on the brain.

And I served it to kids for breakfast with ice cream.  I figure some calcium is better than no calcium.  And it gives me money in the bank for all the times I ask them to try brown rice and kimchi.

    love the “crisp” photo, ….did you get to wear that cute new apron that bethany made for you while you were cooking it ? Those lucky firefighters.
    glad they are starting to realize it. lucky grandkids, that their mom lets them eat icecream for breakfast, and maybe not so lucky that they have to try kimchie for dinner. i want some crisp for breakfast, best wishes today for a fun and successful cooking class, they are gonna love ya!

    Where are you getting all of that amazing fruit? And how expensive is it? We’re making the blueberry cake again today, this time with strawberries. I know it’s not the same as blueberries or raspberries, but Karl brought us back a tray of the most amazing strawberries. Yummy. And when I say “we”, I mean Jasmine. HA!

      3 guesses where I got the fruit (and and the first two don’t count). MacPhersons, silly! In fact, the nectarines were marked down because of general bruising and unsightliness–$1.50 for 10 of them. The plums + blueberries were about $4, and the cherries came from my parents visit to Yakima. So total fruit cost to me was $5.50.

        I’ve been focusing on the veggies while I’m there. Red peppers were 2 for $1 this week, so I stocked up on those. I forget to look at the fruit, partly because it does look like it’s going to go bad in seconds. I’ll have to remember the crostada and crisp options next time.

    This post has nothing to do with this crisp but I wanted to have it show up as current! Thank you so much for a wonderful class here on Whidbey!!! I had promised myself to take the quinoa/collard/tofu salad to work tomorrow — but I had forgotten how much I miss tofu. Instead, I’ll share the humus you gave me.

    Before I ate the entire package of the aforementioned quinoa/collard/tofu salad I did offer some to John. I shouldn’t have told him about the tofu. He deferred to me. :)
